Natural Awakenings Naples and Fort Myers

Who’s a Natural Awakenings Reader?: Meet Patrick Nolan

Patrick Nolan

Work: Fox 4 News anchor, Amrit Method yoga instructor and yoga nidra facilitator.

Proudest Achievement: While TV news broadcasting is notorious for the turnover of reporters and news anchors, I’m proud that I’ve been a part of Fox 4 News and the Southwest Florida community for 12 years. Another proud achievement was receiving the Peace Award, given to me by a domestic violence group for my reporting on the law and violence against women.

Expectations for the Future: I let go of expectations whenever they pop into my head so that I can better enjoy the present moment.

Favorite APP: Yogi Says

Favorite websites: NPR.org, Politico.com

Local causes supported: Multicultural Centre of Southwest Florida, Laces of Love, St. Matthew’s House, Drug Free Collier, David Lawrence Foundation, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Relay For Life, Florida Native Plant Society and Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support, Inc.

Favorite thing about Natural Awakenings: I like reading about what other individuals in the community are doing to find their way to better health; it gives me ideas for my own lifestyle. As the anchor for a medical segment at Fox 4, the magazine provides me with opportunities to stay current on local health trends.

Most frequented healthy food restaurant: Brooke’s Natural Cafe, Fort Myers. Her tempeh tacos are the best food on the planet.

How do you invest in your community: In my role at Fox 4, I work to find out the facts and report the story from different perspectives. There’s no better investment than seeking and sharing the truth with my community. I also do what my dad says is the first step to demonstrating to anyone that you love them—show up. I show up every chance I get in our community. This can range from teaching yoga to special needs adults to moderating a community forum on mental health.

Favorite quote: “Our deepest fear is not that are we inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”—Marianne Williamson

What are you doing to be the change you want to see in the world? As a journalist and news anchor, I’m dedicated to giving a voice to the voiceless in our community. As a yoga teacher, I listen to my internal voice and encourage students to do the same. Both can be challenging and deeply rewarding.
