Laura Cavanagh: Helping to Lead a Hemp Revolution

by Lee Walker

Based on her personal experiences and the health benefits she realized from taking cannabidiol (CBD) oil, Laura Cavanagh became a hemp educator and advocate. “After less than 10 days, my anxiety and worry dissipated, allowing me to live in the present. After 10 weeks, my chronic sciatica pain vanished, and after one whole year, I no longer needed a heavy dose of Effexor, a prescriptive antidepressant I took for 12 years,” says Cavanagh, who represents Prime My Body, a wellness company that produces RECEPT, a leading brand of CBD oil that includes the rarest cannabinoid, known as cannabigerol (CBG), produced by the cannabis plant.

“I educate individuals and small groups onsite at local businesses. My free educational Hemp 101 classes cover CBD and most importantly, CBG, which is referred to as the “parent” of CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Although hemp and marijuana are taxonomically the same plant, they are simply different names for the same genus (Cannabis) and species. The difference is that cannabis plants with 0.3 percent or less of THC are industrial hemp. Cannabis plants with more than 0.3 percent THC are marijuana. No one gets high on hemp CBD oil,” says Cavanagh, who notes that research demonstrates that CBG may be more beneficial than CBD and THC (which produces the traditional euphoria) to treat anxiety, muscle spasms, chronic lower back pain and sports injuries.

Cavanagh never tires of telling people about the science behind CBD and CBG, as well as the many benefits of cannabidiol. “These include but are not limited to reducing pain, helping control symptoms of depression, decreasing damage caused when blood supply returns to brain tissue after lack of oxygen caused by a stroke, reducing symptoms of Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as in general works as an anti-arrhythmic, reducing inflammatory diseases of the skin such as psoriasis, and reducing inflammation and pain related to rheumatoid arthritis,” she advises.

Cannabidiol also helps protect the brain during a stroke, prevents osteoporosis, decreases swelling and pain after a sports injury, reduces the addiction caused by cigarettes, opioids, and alcohol, acts as an antipsychotic, increases alertness and the ability to focus and concentrate, gives a deeper and more restful sleep, controls acne, decreases the symptoms of schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder, and can be used to treat epilepsy, according to Cavanagh.

CBG is a cannabinoid that effectively inhibits GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain. This may explain why CBG may be more beneficial than both CBD and THC to help treat anxiety, muscle spasms, chronic lower back pain and sports injuries. “Combining CBD and CBG together to achieve different benefits is better than using each compound on its own. You get the added benefits of both without any side effects and no high. This and RECEPT’S ability to quickly absorb within 35 milliseconds is why it is so effective,” enthuses Cavanagh.
