Natural Awakenings Naples and Fort Myers

Running Events Return to the Everglades

The fifth annual Everglades Ultras off-road running races are set for February 20 in Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, in the Everglades. Registration is open for the event’s three separate races: 25 kilometers, 50 kilometers and 50 miles. The latter two are USA Track and Field Florida Association state championships.

“This is a unique race venue,” says Race Director Bob Becker. “Runners will experience all the varied environments in the Fakahatchee Preserve, running on raised trails through cypress swamps, grasslands and wooded areas. Given the natural beauty and diverse plant and wildlife in the preserve, many runners carry their camera on race day. This is a race runners return to year after year.”

Becker notes that runners, limited to a total of 300, are supported along the way with aid stations manned by park and Friends of Fakahatchee volunteers. An after-race party will be held on the shores of the preserve’s Lake Harmon.
