Walsh Begins Therapy for Couples in Bonita Springs

Peggy Walsh

Board-Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist Peg Walsh has opened a new office at 9990 Coconut Road, in the Brooks Executive Center, in Bonita Springs. She will provide a blend of both Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused couples therapy and American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapists-certified sex therapy approaches for the treatment of couples in distress.

“When couples come for help, they have often waited over six years,” says Walsh. “Finally deciding to come for counseling is a big step often born of desperation. They have been in pain a long time. They are in what Gottman calls ‘negative sentiment override.’ They can no longer see anything positive in their partner. They have usually tried everything they can think of to reach their partner, to be understood and to create some sort of harmony, but repeatedly, they are defeated. I see many people who love each other, but can’t engage their partner in any constructive way. They are lonely and hopeless.”

She assists couples in handling what she calls “a tsunami of emotions” and what Gottman termed “gridlocked” with perpetual problems, noting, “If partners leave the relationship for another, they will have a new set of 69 percent perpetual problems with the new partner.”
