Microdermabrasion is one of the more recent cosmetic esthetic procedures to cross over from the exclusive Hollywood celebrity “youthenizing” scene to mainstream spas. Performed by a dermatologist or esthetician, the noninvasive exfoliation and mild skin resurfacing technique is completed by using a tool that applies super-fine exfoliating crystals to the surface layer of skin on the face, chest, neck, arms or hands to buff away the dead skin cells from the outermost layer of the skin, which shows fine lines, wrinkles, tone, texture and blemishes. Sometimes described as an instant facelift, the painless procedure requires no recovery time and is a good alternative to the more aggressive options of chemical peels, cosmetic surgery and Botox injections.

The skin rejuvenation treatment requires no anesthesia and makes only subtle changes, because it targets the outermost of the five layers of the epidermis, the barrier between the outside world and the lower skin layers. It works on all skin types and colors and causes no skin color changes or scarring. Microdermabrasion leaves the skin looking softer and brighter, but will not remove deep wrinkles, deep acne scars or severe imperfections.
