When Andrea Sorrenti, owner of Andrea’s Organic Hair Studio & Day Spa, in Naples, opened her own studio, she knew exactly what she wanted for her clientele and staff of stylists: a sustainable environment and organic products that would maintain the same kind of healthy setting she enjoyed at home. “I live a very sustainable lifestyle at home, which includes cleaning with environmentally friendly products, tending my chickens and growing my own vegetables and fruits that I bring to work and share with my staff and clients,” says Sorrenti, who also uses hair clippings from the studio to keep unwanted critters away from her garden and maintain moisture in the soil.

Sorrenti’s staff of stylists has shown their support for a sustainable work environment by adding their signatures to the Green Conscious Salon commitment.
“The commitment, which is an aspect of the Florida Association of Beauty Professional’s Green Conscious Salon Certification program, acknowledges that my studio observes a set of best management practices in the areas of communication, commitment and waste reduction,” says Sorrenti, a 25-year veteran of the beauty industry who has won numerous awards for her professional skills. “While working at JCPenney for 12 years, I was one of the top stylists in the country, fifth in my district and in the U.S.,” explains Sorrenti, who notes that although national recognition satisfied her competitive nature, she yearned for a small and intimate studio of her own.

“I was able to make my dream come true in this studio and spa, which is unusual because it consists of several two-chair suites, in addition to several
rooms comfortably suited for massage therapy, facials, manicures and pedicures,” says Sorrenti. This means that clients can spend a relaxing day in a
serene, toxin-free area enjoying a massage, manicure/pedicure and facial and having their hair styled and/or colored with organic, gluten-free products. “We even give our signature pedicures a fresh citrus twist with the oranges I bring from my trees. We slice them to use in the pedicure bowl and to massage and hydrate the skin on the calves of the legs,” explains Sorrenti.

From entrance to exit, Sorrenti’s green, organic touch is visible. “I brought my 25-year collection of china cups to work to use in the spa sitting area, rather then letting them gather dust on the shelves at home. I think the beauty of the china is a lovely way to reduce the salon’s footprint while letting people know that we’re serious about the need to recycle,” notes Sorrenti, who hopes that it inspires her clients to do the same at home.
